Depression Therapy in Orlando, FL
Depression doesn't always look like sadness.
Sometimes it looks like nothing at all — months passing in a fog, going through the motions, wondering when things started feeling this flat.
Those feelings of numbness, indifference, and hopelessness. It’s not exactly what most people picture when they think of depression. Rather, the word usually conjures images of sadness, sorrow, and tears. Those can, and at times certainly are part of it, but they fail to adequately convey the experience that many people have, that being: Nothing. Months, even years pass by in this state of nothingness, to where the sadness, sorrow, and tears would be quite welcome because it would at least be something.
A lot of attention is given to biological predispositions and individual circumstances, and those points certainly have their merits. However, a major factor that does not get anywhere near as much attention is the cultural one.
We live in a very unusual, very unprecedented time. Technology that was supposed to bring us closer together has pushed us farther apart. Companies contrive problems only to sell us their solutions. It feels like we're inching toward war, climate collapse, and financial ruin, perhaps all of them. All you can do is watch it on your TV, alone and helpless in your $1400 one bedroom apartment.
This world is so alien to what the human mind requires to function properly and to feel good — and the fact that all the attention is on "chemical imbalances" and not the broken society only raises more questions.
Why is it like this?
So what do people do?
Many people reach for drugs, alcohol, video games and media, workaholism, and so on, but that doesn’t really address the issue, rather, distracts for a while, and even then, with limited success. Nothing practical has changed, you’re still just as depressed, perhaps even more-so now because you’re hungover half the time.
How can therapy help?
A lot of the work, I feel, is about examining and changing your relationship to many of the things we've mentioned above.
Yes, people have become increasingly isolated because of technology — and you're still alive, still capable of connecting with others. How can we shift the perspective, and ultimately the actions, around that? Similarly, yes, you're alone in your one bedroom apartment. But you have food, your health, and free time. How can you use that in a way that actually matters to you?
It's not easy work — absolutely not — but it does one thing that depression would prefer you not do: exercise your agency. Depression wants to keep you running the same circle, because despite how miserable it is, it's familiar. And familiar is oddly comforting.
This of course is how I feel, as a depression therapist in Orlando.
Don't Suffer in Silence
If any of this sounds familiar, please reach out. It doesn't have to be me, or even a therapist. It could be an old friend, a family member. Please don't keep suffering in silence.
If you're looking for depression therapy in Orlando
-
Mostly talking — but with some direction to it. Depression therapy in Orlando with me is psychodynamic, meaning we're interested in what's underneath the symptoms, not just managing them. We look at patterns, relationships, and the circumstances driving the depression. It's slower and deeper than CBT, and for a lot of people that's exactly what's been missing.
-
Depends on what's driving it and what you want out of therapy. Some people come for a few months and feel significantly different. Others stay longer because the work goes deeper. There's no set timeline and no pressure to commit to anything upfront.
-
Talking to people in your life can help, but those conversations often stay on the surface or fall into familiar patterns. Therapy gives you a space that’s focused entirely on you, where you can look more honestly at what’s going on and start making intentional changes.
-
That’s completely normal. A lot of people feel skeptical, especially if they’ve been feeling this way for a long time. The first step is just a conversation — you don’t have to commit to anything beyond that.
